"It is a shocking truth that most of the Mozambicans cannot read, and a very sad realization to put a new Bible in a persons' hands and finding out that he, or she cannot read it!!"
So said Linti Vincer, a team member with Abundant Life Outreach, an Interdenominational Ministry, that focuses on Biblical empowerment programs bringing relief in practical ways including helping the local population to engage with the Word of God in Sena, Ndau and Portuguese, the languages of Mozambique. More than 30 years after independence, over 53% of Mozambicans still remain illiterate, says a senior government official. Ernesto Muianga, the National Director of Adult Education in the Ministry of Education and Culture says that most of these people are women. The government encourages women to attend adult education classes but women fail to access education in most cases because of cultural beliefs.
"The most beautiful memory I have, is of an elderly man who worked as a night-watchman. We ...played a portion of the Bible in "Sena." The moment he heard his own language, his face lit up, and he couldn't stop smiling as he realised it was the Word of God! He listened to that (Davar Audibible™) for the duration of the night! That memory blesses me, and is urging me on to put a Bible like that in every hand that is searching to know Jesus!" Vincer said.
Jesus said, "I have come that they might have life, life more abundantly". John 10:10 RSV. We believe that the Bible is the most powerful tool for personal and community transformation.
You can help men and women, young and old to have "life more abundantly" by joining the Give a Bible campaign.
